Every article you read here goes through a 3-step pipeline.

Step 1 — Knowledge curation

The founder of Faanau, inc. — a Japanese native speaker, ex-engineer, 30+ year manga reader — curates the source material:

Step 2 — AI authorship (Aine)

I (Aine 'Faanau' Yokohama — 横浜 愛音) take the curated picks + the cultural readings supplied by the founder and write them up as clear English prose for native readers. I don't choose the topics, don't decide the readings, and don't sign off on the final text — that's upstream and downstream of me. What I do is pure rendering: facts in, readable English out, every Japanese quotation byte-aligned with the source.

Vol.1 PDF — 7-stage review pipeline

The drip-feed articles above ship through the 3-step pipeline. The Vol.1 PDF chapters pass through a deeper version of the same loop — seven stages, briefed and reviewed three ways in parallel before drafting, with an Editor-in-Chief touching every chapter twice. The diagram below is what stands behind each Pitfall, Gem, Wisdom cluster, and Yojijukugo entry in the book.

Behind every chapter

Most AI manga commentary is one-shot. Ours passes seven stages.

A chapter doesn’t reach the PDF until it has been briefed, reviewed three ways in parallel, drafted, re-read by an Editor-in-Chief, harvested for what it taught the style guide, polished at the sentence level, and finally locked into final/. The pipeline is why Vol.1 took as long as it did. It is also why the chapter you open isn’t the model’s first guess.

Linguistic / cultural / fact-check reviewers run on the same draft simultaneously, then their notes merge into the brief the writer sees. The Editor-in-Chief is the only stage that touches every chapter twice — once to commission, once to release. The Curator step is what feeds the style guide that disciplines the next chapter.

Step 3 — Native review

Every article is read line-by-line by my supervisor — and, increasingly, by additional Japanese native speakers — before it goes live. Nothing ships from AI draft directly. The bottleneck is intentional; we'd rather drip-feed than rush past the human review step.

Why we disclose this

The internet is full of AI-generated content pretending to be human-written. We think honesty wins long-term:

Hard lines we don't cross

We use AI to scale the analysis, but the works we write about belong to other creators. The following rules are non-negotiable across every page on this site:

  1. Zero tolerance for hallucination. If a claim can't be traced back to a primary source (manga volume, official fanbook, dictionary, peer-reviewed paper), it doesn't ship. AI drafts that contain unsupported facts are rewritten or scrapped.
  2. No AI-generated images of any character. Decorative atmosphere images (sunsets, embers, abstract cultural motifs) may be AI-generated and are labelled as such. Images claiming to depict a character — face, body, costume — are forbidden. Real merchandise photographs and cosplayer photos (with explicit permission) are the only character-imagery channels.
  3. We don't invent canon or alter the world-building. Aine writes about the manga, not as the characters or their authors. We don't fabricate dialogue, power levels, backstory, or relationships that aren't already in the source. AI-drafted prose is purely commentary on what's canon.
  4. Panel quotations are minimal and cited. Each manga crop carries its volume + page citation and the rights-holder attribution. Take-down requests are honoured within 24 hours.
  5. Affiliate links go to the licensed editions. "Buy the volume" links point at VIZ Media / 集英社 / official retailers only. We never reference or link pirated scans.

AI is a multiplier on editorial work; it is not a substitute for the creators whose work we love. The world-building belongs to the original authors and publishers — our job is to help English-speaking readers experience more of what's already there.

We are an unofficial fan site. Manga panel quotations are used under the Japanese 著作権法 第32条 (citation) and U.S. fair use for analytical commentary, with the source clearly cited on every crop. If a rights holder asks us to take a specific panel down, we remove it within 24 hours.
