The Moku Moku no Mi (モクモクの実) is the Logia-type Devil Fruit that turns Marine officer Smoker's entire body into smoke, letting him generate, control, and become white plumes of it at will. VIZ's main-story rendering is Plume-Plume Fruit — first used when Buggy's crew reacts to Smoker single-handedly wrecking their gang in Vol. 12, p.14 ("HE'S TOO STRONG! HE HAS THE POWERS OF THE PLUME-PLUME FRUIT!"). The corpus catches VIZ breaking its own naming five volumes later, when Vol. 19, p.44 instead reads "SMOKE-SMOKE'S WITH HIM!!" for the same power — a rare mid-series rename this dictionary can verify byte-for-byte against the original page scans.

モクモク (mokumoku) is a standard Japanese ideophone for something billowing or puffing upward in thick clumps — smoke rising from a chimney, steam off a hot meal, storm clouds building (煙がモクモクと立ち上る, "smoke billows up in thick plumes"). No kanji; purely katakana, like the vast majority of Devil Fruit names. It is one of the more literal fits in this dictionary: the word already means exactly the visual Smoker produces before any power is attached to it.

Moku Moku is this dictionary's cleanest documented case of VIZ changing a Devil Fruit's English name mid-series and never fully settling on one. "Plume-Plume Fruit" is the form used at Smoker's earliest full appearances (Vol. 12, confirmed against the real scanned page) and the form later recorded in the Vol. 30 SBS Devil Fruit roundup list, which suggests it was treated as the "official" catalog name at least through the Alabasta arc. But Vol. 19, p.44 — mid-Alabasta, a Baroque Works agent reacting to Smoker's arrival — instead calls the same power "Smoke-Smoke," a plainer, more transparent gloss of モクモク that a reader could arrive at without knowing the word means "billowing" specifically. Both renderings point at the same fruit; neither is wrong, exactly; but a reader tracking Smoker's power across only a few volumes would meet two different English names for it without any story-side explanation.

This kind of drift is exactly the pattern this dictionary's Bara-Bara and Noro-Noro entries also document — VIZ's early-2000s One Piece translation evidently did not always run named-entity checks against earlier volumes, especially for background characters whose Devil Fruits hadn't yet been given a dedicated spotlight chapter. Smoker is a recurring antagonist-turned-ally across dozens of volumes, which makes the inconsistency more noticeable in hindsight than it would be for a one-arc villain — by the time "Plume-Plume" resurfaces in later volumes, some readers may have already mentally filed him under "Smoke-Smoke Man" instead.

Unlike Wapol's or Foxy's fruits, Moku Moku carries no combat gimmick beyond the base intangibility every Logia grants — Smoker's threat comes from his jitte and his tactical mind more than from creative smoke attacks, at least in these early appearances. That makes the fruit name itself carry more of the character-identity weight than usual: "the smoke man" (or "the plume man") is essentially Smoker's whole visual pitch to a first-time reader, which is part of why a wobbling English name for that exact detail stands out more than it might for a flashier power.
