Scene context

Rengoku is explaining his personal definition of victory during combat with Tanjiro at his side. Rather than measuring success by defeating enemies, he bases it solely on whether his junior, Tanjiro Kamado, survives. He speaks directly to Tanjiro here, declaring that if Tanjiro dies, he will consider himself a complete failure—regardless of any other outcome in battle.

Character voice

Rengoku speaks with unwavering conviction and intensity, using assertive masculine markers (俺, ぞ) that reflect his passionate, duty-driven personality. His directness and lack of hedging convey absolute resolve: he is stating a non-negotiable principle about his priorities and values.

Grammar

V-te form + しまう + たら (conditional) JLPT N3

Noun + に + なる + てしまう JLPT N3
Ni natte shimau expresses becoming a state with regrettable completion. 負けになってしまう means 'will end up being/becoming a defeat,' emphasizing the unwanted result.
俺 (ore) + possessive の JLPT N3
Ore is an informal, assertive first-person pronoun common in strong or determined speech. 俺の負け ('my defeat') reflects Rengoku's direct, passionate character.
