Chidori (千鳥, Chidori) is a high-speed lightning-natured technique that Kakashi Hatake invents and later teaches to Sasuke Uchiha: chakra is compressed and shaped into the hand at such speed that it produces a chirping sound "like a thousand birds." Kakashi's own original version of the same jutsu is separately named Raikiri (雷切, "Lightning Cutter"), earned after he sliced through an actual bolt of lightning with it. VIZ keeps 千鳥 romanized as "CHIDORI" throughout, while 雷切 is almost always translated as "LIGHTNING BLADE" — a rare case of the same corpus applying two different localization strategies to what is, in-story, the same jutsu.

Kanji breakdown

千 (chi) — "thousand," used idiomatically for "countless/many" (as in 千代 "a thousand generations"), not a literal count. 鳥 (dori/tori) — "bird(s)." Together 千鳥 also happens to be an existing Japanese word (plover, a real shorebird species, and a classical decorative motif) that predates the manga — Kishimoto repurposed an existing noun rather than coining one, unlike most other named jutsu. 雷 (rai) — "lightning/thunder." 切り (kiri, from 切る) — "to cut," the plain, everyday verb (contrast with the more violent 斬る used in some sword-style names).

The corpus's single richest page for this entry is Vol. 13 p.107, where Kakashi's students see the attack for the first time and the manga stops to explain both names in the same breath: Gai's student calls it "つまり雷切" ("ALSO KNOWN AS RAIKIRI-- LIGHTNING BLADE"), and in the very next panel Sasuke, watching Kakashi teach it to him, simply says "千鳥……" ("...CHIDORI."). That single page is effectively the technique's dual birth certificate: 雷切 is what Kakashi's generation calls his own original move (earned in the field, after the fact, as a nickname for what he did), while 千鳥 is the formal jutsu name he gives the version he teaches Sasuke. The corpus's earliest hit for 雷切 predates this scene by nine volumes — Kakashi already uses it, unnamed as "千鳥," against Zabuza's clone in Vol. 4 ("雷切" / "LIGHTNING BLADE!") — so by the time Vol. 13 finally explains the terminology, readers have already watched the attack twice without knowing what to call it.

VIZ's two different treatments of these near-synonyms is the real story here. 千鳥 is romanized as CHIDORI in effectively every one of its 44 corpus appearances, including the one moment (Vol. 17 p.38) where the manga spells it out phonetically before the kanji resolves — "ちどり千鳥……？" — rendered as "CHI-DORI: 1000 BIRDS...?", the only place the literal meaning gets spelled out for readers at all. 雷切, meanwhile, is translated as "LIGHTNING BLADE" in the overwhelming majority of its 29 appearances, with only Vol. 13's naming scene and one later panel (Vol. 37 p.96, a bare "雷切" rendered simply "RAIKIRI") giving it the romanized treatment. The asymmetry tracks the technique's own in-story hierarchy: Chidori is the branded, canonical name taught to a student and used hundreds of times going forward, while Raikiri stays a nickname — translated because it was never meant to be a proper noun in the first place.

The final corpus hit, Vol. 71 p.182 ("神威雷切！！" / "KAMUI LIGHTNING BLADE!!"), fuses Raikiri with Kakashi's Mangekyo Sharingan dimension-warping ability decades after its debut — the two abilities Kakashi is best known for, combined into one attack name, closing a loop that started back in Vol. 4.
