This technique's own name is a small demonstration of how much weight Japanese orthography can carry, because 蜈蚣 and 百足 are the same word wearing two different outfits. Both are read mukade and both mean "centipede" — 蜈蚣 is the dedicated kanji pair reserved for the animal, while 百足 is a transparent, literal alternate spelling built from ordinary characters anyone can read at a glance. Gotouge uses the opaque, dictionary-correct 蜈蚣 for the dance's shouted opening callout, then switches to the literal 百足 for the follow-through — and forces its reading away from the expected mukade toward the on-yomi-flavored hyakusoku, so the sound itself briefly foregrounds "hundred legs" as a count rather than as a creature's name. It's a deliberate two-step: name the animal first, then spell out what makes it dangerous.
蛇腹, the second half of the sub-name, reinforces the same idea from a completely different angle. It's an ordinary Japanese word for an accordion fold or zigzag pleat — the ridged paper on a hand fan, the collapsible barrel of a bellows camera, an accordion door — chosen because a centipede's segmented body, and the wild zigzagging path Shinobu's blade traces across the panel, both resemble that same repeating fold pattern. VIZ's "Hundred-Legged Zigzag" translates both halves plainly and accurately, though it necessarily drops the kanji-switching wordplay between 蜈蚣 and 百足 that only a reader of the original text would notice.
This is also the last of Shinobu's techniques cataloged on this hub, and its placement in the story gives "zigzag" a grim second meaning. It lands during the final stretch of her duel with Doma, immediately after he has told her — almost gently — that she's already beyond saving and should stop resisting. The blade's unpredictable weaving path is, narratively, everything Shinobu has left to fight with: not the raw force to finish a demon in one strike, but the same speed-over-power philosophy that defines every Insect Breathing dance on this hub, pushed to its absolute limit against an opponent she cannot actually defeat by force alone.
